What Rate of DLA 'Care'/AA?

LOWER CARE (DLA only—no equivalent in AA)

This is paid either:
  • · because you have difficulties with care needs for a short-ish period (or periods added together) during the day—probably amounting to around an hour.
    OR
  • · because even if you are given all the ingredients, you cannot cook a main meal for yourself. This includes planning the meal and co-ordinating the processes involved.

MIDDLE CARE DLA or LOWER AA

    This is paid either:
  • · because you have difficulties with care needs on and off through the day
    OR
  • · you need someone to keep an eye on you most of the day
    OR
  • · you have difficulties with care needs more than once at night, or for one spell of over twenty minutes or so
    OR
  • · someone needs to be awake to watch over you more than once a night or for one spell of over twenty minutes or so

HIGHER CARE DLA or HIGHER AA

    This is paid if
  • · you have difficulties with care needs on and off through the day
    OR
  • · you need someone to keep an eye on you most of the day
    AND
  • · you have difficulties with care needs more than once at night, or for one spell of over twenty minutes or so
    OR
  • · someone needs to be awake to watch over you more than once a night or for one spell of over twenty minutes or so

Basically then, difficulties just for a short while or with cooking a main meal = DLA lower care

Difficulties just during the day or just during the night = DLA middle care or AA lower rate.

Difficulties day AND night = DLA higher care or AA higher rate.

So… how do you go about claiming?

DLA (Disability Living Allowance) and AA (Attendance Allowance) are probably the two most important benefits for people with any sort of longer-term illness or disability - including mental health problems.
