SECTION 2—MOBILITY

The information relating to lower Mobility is on pages 4 and 5 of Section 2. Page 4 gives you a big blank box to complete.

This is where to detail the difficulties you have when you’re outdoors in unfamiliar places, what happens and what help you could do with from another person.

e.g. ‘Because of my mental health problems I am anxious all the time I am outside. When things get too much the panic starts. This makes me feel like things are closing in around me—I get breathless, sweaty and feel a desperate need to get away as quickly as I can. When this has happened I have had to abandon what I was trying to do… I have had to go without my tablets because I couldn’t face going on to the chemists.

Because of this I need someone with me to help me to deal with my anxiety, encourage me to use my breathing techniques, and to guide me to somewhere I can start to feel safer…’

OR

‘Although the medication mostly stops the voices I still hear them from time to time and they can be very distracting when you’re trying to talk to someone else or concentrate on crossing the road.

I still feel paranoid about other people too… I feel that they’re looking at me and laughing at me… This can make me feel very upset, and sometimes I have a go back. This has ended up with me in trouble.

I need someone I trust with me to make sure I am safe when I’m outside.’

OR

‘When I’m feeling ‘up’ I’ll go out and spend money like there’s no tomorrow, and I have these big ideas about what I’m going to do. This has lead to me building up huge debts. I’ve also put myself at risk because I have started mixing with people who took advantage of me. Although I don’t have these problems all the time, when I get worse it happens very quickly, so I still need someone with me all the time to supervise what I am doing…’

DLA (Disability Living Allowance) and AA (Attendance Allowance) are probably the two most important benefits for people with any sort of longer-term illness or disability - including mental health problems.
