Care Needs (DLA and AA)

Does your mental health get in the way with:
  • · Making yourself get out of bed in the morning?
  • · Motivating yourself to get dressed?
  • · Remembering to take your medication?
  • · Being active within your home?
  • · Taking part in hobbies or social life?
  • · Communicating with others?
  • · Dealing with forms and letters?
  • · Making yourself wash/ bath regularly?
  • · Eating properly and regularly?
  • · Cooking a main meal?
  • · Getting to bed/ sleep at nights?

The DWP term these ‘Attention’ needs.

If the answer to all or any of these is yes, then you could be entitled to the Care component of DLA or Attendance Allowance—although AA does not include difficulties you have with cooking.

You can also get DLA or AA because your mental health puts you (or others) at risk in some way—e.g.
  • · You self harm
  • · You feel suicidal
  • · You have an eating disorder
  • · You can get aggressive
  • · The way you are makes other people react aggressively to you
  • · Your concentration is very poor—e.g. you don’t make sure that fires are safely out… leave cigarettes burning etc.
  • · You have ideas or thoughts that frighten you into behaviour which could be dangerous
  • · You wander off
  • · You put yourself in situations where others could take advantage of you
  • · When you become more unwell it happens very quickly
  • · When you become unwell you try to hide it from others

The DWP term these ‘Supervision’ needs

How much DLA or AA you will get depends on how much of the day/ night you have difficulties, and what sort of difficulties they are...

DLA (Disability Living Allowance) and AA (Attendance Allowance) are probably the two most important benefits for people with any sort of longer-term illness or disability - including mental health problems.
